Now I consider Beijing to be one of the best cities in the world, for food. But it’s not for the faint of heart, the Chinese are not shy about flavor, and they eat almost anything you could imagine. The best place to test this theory, here we are on Beijing’s Wangfujing Night Market, now, here you can get almost anything you can possibly imagine, and that ranges from things that are really great like strawberries and kiwi to things like crickets, larva and little small cocoons, starfish seriously if that one point is alive and crawl around you can find it here if on a stake. I decided to try a specialty. Now needless to say these creepy, crawly, nasty, potentially poisonous creatures have never been in this strong menu item for me before. Something about the vitamins tail always had me ordering the trim cocktail instead. But hey, there is a first time for everything. OMG, I cannot believe I am about to eat this.




Once you get passed the fried better, it tastes a lot like a… well like scorpion. Because of the seasoning you don’t actually taste it first, but there is a distinct moment that I would call a splatter moment, where the true scorpion flavor comes through. And supposedly eating scorpion is good for your knees, then again, that was according to this guy. All in all it wasn’t so bad, but it didn’t fill me up, I am definitely still hungry.




This is the dish Beijing is best known for, Duck, we are at the source when these guys have been doing this forever. It’s a Beijing tradition that is taking seriously perfect cooking technique that was once reportedly, a state secret. To partake in this Beijing delicacy, I am joined by 2 new friends. Victoria has been living in Beijing for 3 years and Li Shang moved to Beijing when he was 1 year old. “It’s the oldest one in Beijing. It’s…” “Ur, about, ur, more than 200 years in Qing dynasty.” “This restaurant goes back to the Qing dynasty.”






After cooking this amazing bird until it’s reached a suckling golden brown, they bring it to your table where it’s expertly carved into perfect mouthwatering pieces. You could almost say, it’s poetry in motion. All right bad joke, let’s eat. Hmmmmmm, it’s so good. It’s really sumptuous, it’s really delicious. Taste really good.




There are a few things you have to do on a trip to Beijing and this is one of them.
